4 Steps | How to Create a Vector Image in Photoshop | Without Pen Tool

It is really a quite difficult task to create a vector image in Photoshop. Creating a vector is also a time-consuming job. Especially for people who are not regular users of Photoshop or people like me who are bad at designing. So here I am with an alternative answer to the question of how to create a vector image in Photoshop without using the pen tool.

How to Create A Vector Image in Photoshop?

1. Open and change the size of your image :

i) Go to : Image -> Image size.

ii) I recommend you to set the Resolution of 300 Pixels/inch.

iii) Keep the size of height and width between values between 2000-3000 pixels.

This will give you sharper edges and create smooth results in the final output of your image.

2. Cutting the Main Subject :

i) Create a copy of your image by right-clicking on the background image and press the duplicate layer or by pressing Ctrl + J.

ii) Select the copied layer and select your subject using a quick selection tool. Make sure all the edges are finely selected.

iii) Make the mask of the copied layer by clicking on the mask icon in the below section of layer.

iv) Select the original layer (background) and create a solid layer using adjustment tools placed beside the mask tool.

v) Fill the solid color with white color.

vi) Select the copied layer and color fill layer by clicking shift and then press Ctrl + E to merge them into a single image. Lets us name then layer 1.

3. Vectorizing Image :

i) Now create a copy of the layer 1.

ii) Select the copied layer and Go to Filter -> sharpen -> smart sharpen.

iii) change the values of :

  •  Amount to 240%.
  • Radius to 3.0 Px.
  • Reduce Noise to 30%.

iv) Select Gaussian Blur at remove option and click Ok.

v) Again go to filter -> stylize -> diffuse.

  • Change the mode to anisotropic.
  • Now go to image->image rotation-> rotate it 90o
  • Go to filter -> stylize -> diffuse.

Repeat this Step 3 more time until the image comes into the original position.

Diffuse the layer from all the angles and apply smart sharpen as you did before.

4. Final details to the vector :

i) Create a copy of the layer. how to create vector image in Photoshop

ii) Convert it into smart object by right-clicking on the layer.

iii) Create two more copies of the smart object layer.

iv) Name them as given order :

  • High pass.
  • Soft Details.
  • Hard details.
4.1 Working on hard details :

Select the hard details layer and hide the other entire layers.

i) Go to filter -> Filter gallery.

ii) Open the artistic folder and select the output option.

iii) Change the values of the option s as given below :

  • A number of level – 8.
  • Edge simplicity – 5.
  • Edge fidelity – 1 and click Ok.

iv) Make sure that the ‘hard details layer’ is selected.

v) Now go to filter -> sharpen -> unsharp mask.

vi) Keep the value of :

  • Amount as 150%.
  • Radius at 2px.
  • The threshold at 0 and click Ok.get your vector art Done
4.2 Working on soft details :

Now make the ‘soft details layer’ visible.

Go to filter ->  filter gallery.

i) Select the cutout option again and set the values of :

  • The number of level – 8.
  • Edge simplicity – 6.
  • Edge fidelity – 1 and click Ok.

iii) Again go to filter ->  filter gallery.

iv) Select the cutout option again and set the values of :

  • The number of level – 8.
  • Edge simplicity – 6.
  • Edge fidelity – 2 and click Ok.

v) Double click on the icon shown in the above image and change the opacity to 40%.

vi) Now go to filter -> sharpen -> un-sharp mask.

vii) Keep the value of :

  •  Amount as 280%.
  • Radius at 2px.
  • The threshold at 0 and click ok.

viii) Change the Layer Opacity ‘soft details layer’ to 50 %.

4.3 Working on High pass :

i) Make the high pass layer visible.

ii) Go to filter -> other -> high pass.

iii) Change the value of :

  • Radius to 2 and press Ok.

iv) change its blend mode to overlay.

 ^ All you need to is Select ^

– High pass layer.

– Soft Details layer.

– Hard details layer.

Further, you can make other adjustments such as curves adjustment, saturation, brightness, and contrast adjustment according to your choice.
